Hole #5 at Cedar CrestThis seems as if it should be a birdie hole since it is a relatively short and straight par 5. However, the prevailing wind is usually right in your face, so getting home in two isn't always attainable. A line of trees that run perpendicular to the fairway can create some problems off of the tee. If you can get it by the trees, the hole opens up. It's decision time. Going for it in two can result in a couple of problems. First, there is another line of trees that run perpendicular to the fairway about 40 yards in front of the green. If you balloon your approach shot and can't keep it in the fairway, you could put yourself in jail, leaving yourself next to no chance of getting on the green in three. The other issue is the green-side bunker. Considering the generous sloping contour of the green, dropping one in the bunker is a big no-no. Laying up to about 100 yards is a good choice here, unless there is a favorable wind and you have a yardage you like after your tee shot. The green is a two-tiered design, similar to hole #4 green. However, the slope between tiers is far more dramatic and the bottom tier continues to slope to the front of the green. If the flag is red, it will be a slick putt. If you wind up on the top tier and the flag is red, you'd better be playing in the early morning when there's some dew on the deck. |
